🔑 What is happening with the Meta Pixel? 🔑 Why data ownership matters? 🔑 Five Foundational Moves to Start Owning Your Data |

Hi {{First Name | Friend}}!
What is happening with the Meta Pixel?
A few weeks ago, I sent the newsletter about the disappearing pixel two weeks ago, several of you wrote back with the same question:
"Okay. So what do I do about it?"
Fair.
I laid out the problem in that issue. I told you the pixel isn't what it used to be, that iOS ate 30% of your tracking, that Chrome is next, that Meta is filling in gaps with modeled attribution. All true. All important.
But I didn't tell you the fix, but today I want to fix that.
Because the answer isn't better tracking. Better tracking isn't coming back. The answer is a shift in how you think about your business:
Your paid and organic funnels are only as strong as the data underneath them.
That's the sentence. Read it twice.
You know I teach and manage paid and organic funnels. That's what I've been doing for over eight years. Facebook Ads, Google Ads, email flows, welcome sequences, organic content that compounds. All of it still matters. All of it still works.
But in 2026, both of those pillars are quietly getting weaker. And it isn't because the strategies stopped working. It's because the foundation underneath them, the data, isn't yours.
Why Data Ownership Matters
The version I wish someone had explained to me five years ago
When Meta shows you your Facebook Ads dashboard, that's Meta's version of your customer.
When Klaviyo shows you your email data, that's Klaviyo's version of your customer.
When TikTok reports on your creator campaigns, that's TikTok's version of your customer.
Every platform holds a piece of who your customer is. Each piece is limited to what that platform can see. And every time you pay one of those platforms, you're paying to access data about your OWN customers that you should already have.
That's the trap.
This is the part operators feel but rarely name out loud. When you build your business on top of platform owned data, every platform change hits your revenue. Meta changes attribution. Your ROAS drops. TikTok changes the algorithm. Your organic dies. Klaviyo raises pricing. Your email cost balloons.
None of those changes are because you did anything wrong. They happen because you don't own the ground you're standing on.
Data ownership is the shift from renting your customer relationships to building them.
Five Foundational Moves to Start Owning Your Data
None of these are new. But together, they change what your business is built on. I'll tag each one so you can see where it strengthens your funnel.
Direct email capture at every meaningful moment. [ORGANIC]
Not just at checkout. Before checkout. On product pages. On exit intent. In your welcome flow. Every visitor who leaves without giving you their email is a customer you'll have to reacquire through paid ads later. When you own the email, you don't need to buy them back.
Set up the Meta Conversions API (CAPI). [PAID]
This is the direct fix for the pixel problem I wrote about two weeks ago. CAPI sends conversion data from your Shopify to Meta directly, at the server level, without depending on the browser pixel. It isn't perfect, but it recovers 20 to 30% of what the pixel is missing on iOS and browsers that block tracking. Set it up once, get better attribution forever.
Customer profiles you actually own. [BOTH]
Meta has data about your customer. Klaviyo has data about your customer. Shopify has data about your customer. None of those systems talk to each other. Which means you have three versions of one person, and none of them are complete. Building a unified customer profile in a system you own (a CDP, a good CRM, or even a Google Sheet if you're small) is how you stop having fragmented customer knowledge.
Data customers give you directly, through quizzes and preference centers. [BOTH]
This is data your customer gives you willingly. Their preferences. Their goals. Their birthday. What they're shopping for and why. A quiz that's built well doesn't just recommend products. It captures the WHY behind each customer, which lets you personalize both email and ads with information no platform can give you.
Reviews and UGC hosted on your domain. [BOTH]
If your product reviews live on a platform (Meta, Amazon, Yotpo hosted), you don't own them. If a platform shuts down or your account gets flagged, that content is gone. Hosting reviews and UGC on your own site means every piece of social proof becomes an SEO asset, a creative asset, and a trust signal, all in one place, all yours.
THE THREAD 🔁
Every one of those moves strengthens either your paid funnel, your organic funnel, or both. That's why it compounds.
Paid brings them in. Organic keeps them. Owned data makes both compound.
If you make these five foundational moves this quarter, your Q4 runs on a stronger base. Your ads know who to find. Your emails know who to talk to. Your organic content earns attention that stays with you instead of the platform hosting it.
None of this is glamorous. None of it is new. But it's what separates the brands that will compound through the next three years from the brands that will keep watching their numbers slide without knowing why.
Next issue in two weeks: what to actually DO with the data once you own it. That's where the loyalty economics live. That's where owned data starts reducing ad spend and increasing organic conversion.
To your success,
