Hey {{First Name | Friend}}!

The most expensive advice in e-commerce right now is being given away for free. And it sounds like this:

"Just use Advantage+. Let AI pick your audience. Focus on creative. The algorithm knows better than you do."

I want to talk about why that advice is misleading. And what it's actually costing you.

ADVANTAGE+ IS A TOOL. NOT A STRATEGY.

Let me be clear about this because I've been in enough client accounts to know the difference. As of September 2026, over 650 accounts.

Advantage+ is a Meta product. It uses AI to make targeting, placement, and creative decisions faster than you could manually. It's real. It works. I use it in specific situations for specific reasons.

But Advantage+ is not a strategy. It's a tool.

The narrative you're being sold right now, the one that says "just let AI handle it," is not being pushed by people who've actually scaled a brand from scratch. It's being pushed by people who benefit from you not needing to learn the fundamentals. It’s been sold by memberships, by coaches and by agencies who claim to know the secret.

Before I go further, please know this about me.

I built a women's footwear brand from scratch, 100% self funded. Starting in 2014, I grew it to seven figures with organic social content and Facebook ads. That's 12 years of ads knowledge, so name it, friend, I've seen it. I launched this agency in 2018, and I'm now building a SaaS company. I stay immersed in the daily shifts in ads and tech, and whatever momentum you've been promised, it's only temporary.

On the temporary momentum, it's easier to teach "just use ADV+" in a quick video than it is to teach real campaign architecture. It's easier to sell a course on "letting the algorithm do the work" than one on manual bid strategy and audience segmentation. It's easier for a junior consultant to hand you an Advantage+ campaign than to actually build you a funnel.

None of those things are the same as your business scaling.

Here's what Meta's own product team will tell you (I know because I've asked): Advantage+ works best when you feed it strong signals. Which means it works best when you already understand your customer, your funnel, your creative strategy, and your data. It works worst when you use it as a shortcut to skip learning those things.

You wouldn't hand someone your credit card and tell them to just "buy whatever." Don't hand Meta your ad budget and tell them the same.

What AI Optimization Can’t See

Even the best AI targeting has a ceiling, and it's because AI can only optimize for what it can measure.

Here's what AI can measure:

Someone clicked.

Someone converted.

Someone bought at a certain time on a certain device from a certain audience segment.

Here's what AI can't measure.

WHY that person bought. AI sees a purchase. It doesn't see that your customer has been reading your emails for six months. That her sister recommended you last summer. That she chose you over three competitors because of one specific ingredient in your product. That she was waiting for her tax refund to place the order.

The context around every conversion. AI sees "new customer, $80 order." It doesn't see that this customer's mother has bought from you for three years and that this order is actually a gift for her mother. It doesn't see that the "returning customer" flag in your dashboard is a lie because the customer bought under a different email six months ago.

The human layer that actually drives sales. AI sees clicks. It doesn't see the podcast episode you did last Tuesday that's still driving purchases four weeks later. The customer service response that made someone tell three friends about you. The reply on your Instagram Story that turned a follower into a buyer.

Every one of those things drives revenue. None of them are visible to Meta's AI. Which means every decision you outsource to AI is a decision made with incomplete information.

The brands compounding right now are using AI as one input. Not as a strategy.

They're pairing AI targeting with manual campaigns. They're using owned data to feed AI better signals. They're building customer relationships that don't depend on Meta at all. They're treating AI as a lens to look through their strategy with, not a replacement for having a strategy.

Paid brings them in. Organic keeps them. Owned data makes both compounds.

AI is not a fourth pillar. It's a lens.

If there is one word of advice that I hope you’ll take into consideration is this: Never trust someone (coach, agency, business bestie, etc) who suggests to skip building your audience while they are actively building theirs. I see it daily, friend.

Trust the instinct you already have. The one telling you something is off with "just let AI do it." That instinct is right.
