Yes, the title is true… I once (9 years ago) used our rent money to pay for Facebook ads. 🤯

It was during my first startup—a footwear brand I’ve since exited. Looking back, I can’t believe I had the guts to do something so reckless. And no, friend, I don’t recommend it.

Here’s what happened:

The goal was to spend $1,500 on Black Friday and Cyber Weekend ads. The rent was due a week later, and I didn’t tell my husband. I just did it. Why?

  • I believed in my product like no one else.

  • I knew the power of Facebook ads.

  • I was 100% certain I could make that money back because I’d laid the groundwork—organic marketing, a solid email strategy, and a clear plan.

  • And honestly? I had a deep, burning desire to succeed.

Was the risk worth it? Yes, it was. I made 5.5X my investment, paid the next month’s rent early (hello, guilt conscience 🥹), and learned a lesson I’ll never forget.

But let me be clear,{{first name | Friend}}!

This is not the move I recommend.

Not because of the money. Not even because of the emotional weight I carried while I waited for those sales to come in. 😰

I don’t recommend it because Facebook Ads should never be your last-minute rescue plan.

They are not a gamble. They are not a magic fix.

They are a system—and that system needs to be ready.

And the truth is, I turn away people all the time who want to run ads but…

  • Have no funnel

  • Have no strategy

  • Are not willing to commit to long-term results

Meta Ads need management – they’re not “set it and forget it”

They can run across Facebook + Instagram with one budget

2–3X ROAS is solid – $1 in = $2–3 out (if you’ve done the work)

You need at least 60–90 days to build traction (especially if you’re brand new to ads)

Ads are an investment – not a liability

NEVER run ads without consistent organic content

Expect ads to carry 50–60% of your results – the rest is your funnel, your content, your follow-through

Reinvest your returns – the ads that scale are the ones that get fuel

When you stop posting, emailing, or engaging—ads get expensive, fast
