The Biggest Lie in Entrepreneurship (And How to Break Free)
Hello Friend!
Let’s talk about something no one tells you when you start a business: Revenue does not equal wealth.
I see it all the time—entrepreneurs celebrating $30K months, six-figure launches, or multi-7-figure years. But here’s the truth: if the money is going out as fast as it’s coming in—to team members, tools, ads, and expenses—you’ve built a very expensive job, not a wealth-generating asset.
The real flex isn’t hitting $500K in revenue and keeping $50K. It’s running a $300K business that pays you like it’s $500K because it’s clean, optimized, and designed for profit.
Here’s why this matters:
Revenue is a trap. You can grow your business, but if your expenses grow faster, you’re not actually keeping more.
Profit is freedom. It’s what lets you pay yourself well, build reserves, and create a business that works for your life—not against it.
Complexity kills margins. More team, more tools, and more systems often mean less profit.
So, how do you shift from revenue obsession to profit optimization?
Start with Profit First. Profit isn’t what’s left over after expenses—it’s a line item you budget for first. Aim for 30-60% margins depending on your business model.
For example, A boutique e-commerce business's net profit margin typically falls between 10% and 15% for sustainable long-term operations. However, margins can vary based on industry, specific products, and operational costs.
“Net margins for coaching practices can range from 25% to 55%, with some businesses seeing margins as high as 90%.” Stater Story
“Online course profit margins can range from 50% to 80% or even higher, especially for self-hosted courses.” Stater Story
Audit Your Offers & Pricing Strategy. Which ones are generating the highest profit with the least complexity? Double down on those, remove what does not work!
Simplify to Scale. The leaner your business, the more profitable it becomes.
This isn’t just about numbers—it’s about freedom. Profit is what lets you rest, reinvest, and opt out of hustle when life requires your attention elsewhere.
Cutting expenses and running a lean business doesn’t mean slashing your team or letting go of contractors. In fact, the higher your revenue goals, the more strategic support you’ll need to hit them.
What I’m not suggesting is going at it solo. That’s a fast track to putting yourself in the role of an overworked employee instead of stepping into the CEO seat. Your job isn’t to do everything—it’s to design a business that works without you being in every single detail. Lean doesn’t mean alone, it means intentional.
